Calcium carbonate is the most commonly used calcium compound to bind phosphorus. In patients with chronic renal failure, phosphorus is the most common cause of the disease. Therefore, one goal of the therapeutic approach is to reduce the uptake of phosphorus by foods that are low in phosphorus or by substances that bind phosphorus in the gastrointestinal tract. Calcium carbonate breaks down in the digestive tract and the resulting calcium ions, bind the phosphorus contained in the food, and form insoluble and non-absorbable calcium phosphate. This reduces phosphorus intake. Studies in dogs and humans show that a decrease in phosphorus intake is one of the factors contributing to the increase in survival time in patients with chronic renal failure. chitosan is a polymer of partially deacetylated acetylglucosamine formed during the deacetylation process of chitin. When used in conjunction with calcium carbonate, as a product to aid in calcium binding, it causes a decrease in the concentration of phosphorus in the blood serum, a decrease in the levels of hormones, and a decrease in the excretion of phosphorus. The use of this mixture can be considered as an alternative to clinical diets intended for dogs and cats with chronic renal failure. The vitamin D contained in the product is mainly aimed at restoring its deficiency in chronic renal failure. The kidneys convert the inactive form of vitamin D into active dihydrocholocalciferol. In cases of chronic renal failure, the kidneys are unable to produce the active form of the vitamin, so additional administration is necessary.
